Sunwise
Proposer

Quick, easy and accurate customer sales proposals for photovoltaic projects.

Role: Product Designer Timeframe: 3 months

Overview

Sunwise is an app launched for Mexican market, which provides customer sales proposals and end-to-end tools to manage and grow solar business, both for solar integrators and installers. Throughout 2021, Sunwise has been working on improving the user experience and accessibility norms, while introducing requirements for new audiences. As a continuation of these efforts, we came to redesign the core of the software: The proposer.

Problem

The MVP Proposer was launched in 2020. The team got a lot of support tickets since it was neither intuitive nor enjoyable for users. We need to tackle time loading screen response, inconsistent components, and accessibility issues that stun instead of help.

Goal

Deliver a responsive, clean, but functional Proposer
that fits both Mexican & International users' needs by improving the cohesion and coherence of the information, the loading screen time response, and product discovery to increase the engagement of users while having a delightful experience.

My role : Product designer

Participating throughout the research process, run workshops with customers & stakeholders, user flows, wireframing, and high-end designs.

Emphatize

Secondary research

Conducted a literature review to learn about international market and needs.

Primary research

Interviews with solar experts and users to collect information through observations and conversations about our platform and the photovoltaic industry.

1

The workflow

There’s a path most photovoltaic engineers follow while making a customer solar proposal. The current information structure didn't fit those needs. Ex: Users continuously have to go up and down the screen to check the indicators while working.

2

Loading time

We notice how much time takes for our users to do a proposal in Sunwise. Every time she/he edits a field, The proposal needs to do the estimations & check the services with the database and it takes a lot of time.

3

Poor Language

The Proposer is customized for the Mexican market, both users and customers. It didn’t cover other currencies, concepts, and fields that the photovoltaic world industry manages.

4

Accessible

Considering persona characteristics like advanced age, users might have some disability. Users found it difficult to read some titles and information while identifying the data that is provided while doing a proposal.

5

Not atractive

It's not intuitive for users how The Proposer features work. They are having problems with the cohesion and the coherence of the information. They knew the basics and didn't explore more.

Defining

Familiarity

The solution should follow the way our users do a proposal in the photovoltaic industry. We need to follow their mental model into our structure to help them increase familiarity. This would help to save time too.

Simple

The solution should follow a design system to have consistency, while taking care of accessibility norms & principles.

Compelling

The solution should encourage solar users to explore The proposer's features attractively.

International

The solution should consider concepts for an international photovoltaic market. This has to be present in currency inputs, particular concepts, and iconography.

Speed

The solution should minimize the loading screen time to help users take fast decisions.

Ideation

Workshops

We started ideation sessions with stakeholders and generated different flows and categories for a new general structure.
We came up with the idea to reorder the information and categorize it into cards. We also decide to pass from the main 2 columns structure to a huge single column for the main content and a support section.

Design

Supporting Panel

We give users a static section to increase their productivity, where they can consult information needed all the time and take action faster. With this layout, we create a relationship between focus area and support.

switch

Smooth switching

We keep in mind how difficult it could be to change the way things are placedSince we didn't want our users to struggle with the new structure, we introduce a top actions section. Where users will be able to switch between the old structure proposal and the new one. This, would be a temporary function while they achieve the  learning curve.

Quotation

Add product items, custom attributes like costs, taxes and discounts per product in one same place.

Complements

We invite users to use complementary features to stand out from the market and deliver high-end proposals to customers.

Settings

Our users preconfigure parameters & settings for proposals once they create an account. In addition, we provide a way they can custom it for particular cases in a proposal.

UI Iterations

Several design iterations went into each feature. Here's an example of how UI evolved:

Design system

We decided to go with material design since it's a very customable systema

Retrospective

Result

With the redesign, our users quickly understood the concept of generating a proposal, especially they love how fast it turns, and saw the opportunity to close more deals in less time. In general, users felt confident using The Proposal after they familiarized themselves with the workflow.

What I learned

I was able to learn more about photovoltaic systems and know better the product audience. Also, I foster strong collaboration with software engineers, support team, marketing and some other stakeholders.
